Thanks for the feedback Markus. Ok I admit there could be short-term benefits by killing services. However, my main point was that users are generally not supposed to micromanage the OS by trying to make up for a missing exit button.

I bought "autostarts" btw. thanks to your tip. Not because I have trouble with services, but because I am a curious developer. :)

At least on Android 1.5 (HTC Hero) you get a performance hit with all those applications running in the background.
Get the autostarts app and you will see that a lot of applications startup at certain events. This slows down the phone.
Maybe Android 2.1 got better with regards to this.
